At Sylvamo, we believe that great leadership starts with investing in people. Our leaders actively support and open paths for every person to evolve, ensuring development is not just an opportunity, but a defining part of the Sylvamo experience.
That’s why we were proud to serve as the Title Sponsor of the second annual Women in Print Alliance Book Chat, featuring bestselling author Mita Mallick and her book, The Devil Emails at Midnight: What Good Leaders Can Learn from Bad Bosses.
The event was hosted by two of our own: Elizabeth Bartheld, Vice President of Global Government Relations, and AJ Layo, Sales Manager, who led a fireside conversation with Mita about the leadership pitfalls we’ve all encountered, from the midnight emailer to the micromanager, and how to avoid becoming one ourselves.
The discussion resonated deeply with Sylvamo attendees, sparking real-time engagement in the chat and generating enthusiasm for continuing the conversation internally. In fact, the energy from this event inspired us to explore launching internal book clubs led by leaders across our organization as a way to keep learning, connecting and growing together.
Women in Leadership at Sylvamo
This sponsorship reflects a deeper commitment. Advancing women in leadership is one of Sylvamo’s 2030 sustainability goals. We have set targets to achieve 30% overall women representation and 35% women in leadership positions globally. Today, women hold 27% of our leadership roles, make up 38% of our executive officers and 57% of our board.
Our efforts extend across the company and around the world:
• Women in Leadership Employee Inclusion Networks (EINs) are active globally, including a newly launched community in Krakow, Poland, offering mentoring, leadership sessions and cross-functional networking.
• A $500,000 partnership with UNICEF’s Skills4Girls initiative equips adolescent girls in over 20 countries with the STEM, digital and life skills to succeed.
• Well-being and leadership programming, including sessions on workplace well-being, inspirational leadership and inclusive voices, hosted by our EINs throughout the year.
Telling the Sylvamo Story
Partnering with Women in Print Alliance on this Book Chat was about more than a single event. It’s part of how we support women across the print and paper industries. We are grateful to Lisbeth Lyons Black and the WPA team for this opportunity, and to Mita Mallick for a conversation that left us all thinking about the kind of leaders we want to be.
